Understanding Your Changing Body

Menstrual Health & Smart Choices

An engaging, age-appropriate workshop for Years 5 & 6

Growing up brings lots of changes, and knowing what to expect can make those changes feel much easier to understand.

Our Understanding Your Changing Body: Menstrual Health & Smart Choices workshop gives pupils a safe and supportive space to learn about puberty, periods and looking after themselves as their bodies change.

The session is designed to be informative, interactive, positive and age appropriate, helping pupils develop knowledge and confidence before, or as, they experience puberty and menstruation.

What will pupils learn?

By the end of the workshop, pupils will have an age-appropriate understanding of:

● What is puberty?
● Physical changes
● Emotional changes
● What is a period?
● The menstrual cycle
● Period products
● Looking after yourself
● What if my period starts at school?
● Asking for help
● Respect and empathy

Curriculum-linked learning

Our workshop is designed to support schools' existing Health Education, RSHE and PSHE provision.

The programme covers age-appropriate learning relating to:
● growth and development
● puberty
● menstruation
● physical changes
● emotional wellbeing
● personal care
● menstrual products
● seeking help and support
● respect and positive attitudes towards menstruation.

Schools can use the workshop as part of their wider curriculum programme or as a dedicated menstrual health session.

Inclusive menstrual health education

Periods should not be treated as something embarrassing or secret.

Our workshops encourage open, respectful conversations and can be delivered to mixed groups as well as girls-only groups, depending on the school's preference and existing approach.

Learning about menstruation can help pupils who experience periods feel more informed and supported, while also helping other pupils develop understanding and empathy.

We can also discuss adaptations for pupils with SEND, additional learning needs or other specific requirements with the school in advance.

Workshop options

We offer a choice of a 60 minute workshop or a 90 minute interactive workshop. We can also provide the programme to several classes or an entire year group.

Learning through interaction

We don't believe pupils should simply sit and listen. Our workshops use a mixture of:

Discussion
Creating opportunities for pupils to ask questions and share what they already know.

Myth or Fact activities
Challenging common misunderstandings about puberty and periods.

Interactive questions
Helping pupils think about what they have learned.

Real-life scenarios
Exploring what pupils might do in everyday situations.

Visual learning
Using clear, age-appropriate diagrams and illustrations.

Period product education
Helping pupils recognise the different options available.

Reflection activities
Giving pupils an opportunity to consider what they have learned and identify where they can find support.
